Glossary of terms for Motherboards :

Motherboard Chipset
Determines the processor and RAM compatibility and how fast they function.
Intel: Compatible Intel Pentium and Celeron Processors
Via: Compatible with Pentium 4 and AMD Athlon XP and Duron Processors
nVidia: Compatible with AMD XP and Duron Processors
SiS: Compatible with Pentium 4 and AMD Athlon XP and Duron Processors

Motherboard Form Factor
Specifies the size and layout of the motherboard, which determines different computer case dimensions.
Baby AT: A small motherboard used in 386, 486, and other early pcs.
ATX: (9.5" X 12") Same as Baby ATbut rotated 90 degrees to allow for longer card slots and providing better airflow for the processor.
Mini ATX: (8.2" X 11.2") Smaller than the ATX with fewer expansion slots.
Micro ATX: (9.6" X 9.6") Designed by Intel for more compact low cost computers.
Flex ATX: (9" X 7.5") Smaller version of the Micro ATX that allows for more custom case designs.
LPX: (9" X 8") Designed by Western Digital with a riser card for expansion boards that are parallel rather than perpendicular to the motherboard.
NLX: (9" X 8") Improved more flexible design than the LPX.

Controller Type
A Circuit board used to control a peripheral device which is contained on the motherboard or a plug in card.

Processor Manufacturer
Processor is the central unit in a computer containing the logic circuitry that performs the instructions of a computer's programs.

Processor Type
Refers to the motherboard's chipset compatibility with the cpu.

Maximum Number of CPUs
CPU: (Central Processing Unit) is an older term for processor and microprocessor, the central unit in a computer containing the logic circuitry that performs the instructions of a computer's programs.

Installed Memory
The amount of memory measured in megabytes installed in the system's hardware.
32 MB:
1600 x 1200 Resolution = 108 pictures
1024 x 768 Resolution = 174 pictures
640 x 480 Resolution = 337 pictures
64 MB:
1600 x 1200 Resolution = 217 pictures
1024 x 768 Resolution = 349 pictures
640 x 480 Resolution = 677 pictures
128 MB:
1600 x 1200 Resolution = 435 pictures
1024 x 768 Resolution = 700 pictures
640 x 480 Resolution = 1355 pictures

RAM Type
Refers to the type of RAM compatible with the motherboard.

Maximum Supported RAM
Maximum allotted memory for the motherboard., based on RAM compatibilityand number of memory slots.

Video Card Interface Type
AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) A high-speed port developed by Intel, AGP uses a 32-bit bus that is designed for the display adapter (video card) only. It provides a direct connection between the card and memory, and only one AGP slot is on the motherboard.

AGP 1x Data Transfer rate = 264 Mbytes/sec.
AGP 2x Data Transfer rate = 528 Mbytes/sec.
AGP 4x Data Transfer rate = 1 Gbyte/sec.
AGP 8x Data Transfer rate = 2 Gbytes/sec.
PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most common I/O bus in use today. PCI runs at 33MHz or 66MHz and supports 32 and 64-bit data paths and bus mastering. There are generally three to five slots on the motherboard. Normally 12.28 inches long short PCIs range from 4.68 inches to 6.57 inches in length to fit into smaller slots where space is an issue.
ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) Pronounced "eye-suh." is a standard bus architecture that is associated with the IBM AT motherboards. Most of the older PCs have a combination of ISA and PCI slots, however many no longer support ISA.

Networking
TypeEthernet: 10BaseT connection that transfers at 10 Mbps
Fast Ethernet: 100BaseT connection that transfers at 100 Mbps
Gigabit Ethernet: 1000BaseT connection that transfers at a 1Gbps rate.
IEEE 1394: Allows tranfers from 800 Mbps to 3,200 Mpbs and is compatible with glass, fiber and cat5 cable.
Bluetooth: Wireless network connection with 720 kbps transfer rate at a range of 10 -100 meters.
802.11b: Wireless connection with a transfer rate of11 Mbps in a 2.4 Ghz band.
802.11a: Wireless connection with a transfer rate of 54 Mbps in a 5 Ghz band.
